THE WORLD
A Japanese public high school after dark. Every day, thousands of small terrors soak into the building — failed tests, forgotten homework, being seen, being ignored. At 9 PM the doors lock and that residue wakes up: curses, crawling out of lockers and pooling under the floodlights. Dawn burns them off. The school's oldest secret is a club charter granting four students a hall pass — permission to be where no student should ever be, from last bell to first light, hunting what the school breeds. The win condition of every night, in game and story, is simply: survive until First Bell at 7:00 AM. The sun coming up is the emotional climax of every run — treat dawn as salvation, gold light as grace.
THE CLUB — four students, four anxieties weaponized
The rule of power (borrowed proudly from Jujutsu Kaisen): the source of your fear is the source of your technique. Each member channels the exact thing that eats them.
REN AMASAKI — Knuckle & Flame
The brawler. Furious at a school that already wrote him off; fights close, burns hot, refuses to lose anyone else. De facto captain. Domain: IRON CELL — a cage that drags enemies in and crushes.
YUI KUROKAWA — Needle Thread
The youngest and already top of the class — terrified of a single dropped stitch. Serene in chaos; her threads impose order on it. Domain: SILK CATHEDRAL — the night itself slows inside her weave.
KAITO MIZUHARA — Static Orb
The senior. Chronically exhausted, quietly brilliant, one year from escaping. His power is absence — voids that eat what gets close. Domain: BLACKOUT GRID — the lights die and the storm arrives.
SORA TACHIBANA — Talisman Volley
The trickster, loudest in any room, desperate to be seen — so her charms make sure everything sees her. Grins with a fang. Domain: PAPER STORM — a homing blizzard of golden paper.
They fight as a tag team — one on the floor, the others benched but present (the game calls it The Club). Cut scenes can always stage all four together: walking in line toward camera is the signature ensemble shot.
THE ANTAGONISTS — faculty-shaped fears
The swarm is anonymous dread. The bosses are not villains — they are masks the night wears, the school's memory of authority grown monstrous: THE JANITOR ("clean up after yourself" — what gets thrown away), HALL MONITOR (the terror of being seen), POP QUIZ (being unprepared), THE SUBSTITUTE (the wrong face at the desk), EXAM SEASON ("time is up"), DETENTION (the cage), GROUP PROJECT ("everyone gets the same grade"), PARENT-TEACHER NIGHT, and THE VICE PRINCIPAL. Each has a splash portrait, a tagline, and an arrival beat in-game — boss arrivals are natural stinger material.
THE ARC — three acts
- ACT I — THE FIRST NIGHT. The gates at 9 PM, the club walks in, the first bell tolls wrong. They learn the one rule: hold until dawn. (The intro trilogy in the reel covers this.)
- ACT II — DEEPER ROOMS. Yard → gym → corridors → roof → pool: each stage is a chapter, each boss a confession of what this school does to kids. The club grows — new seats, techniques maturing, the tag-team forming into a family of misfits.
- ACT III — THE NIGHT REMEMBERS. The school starts recognizing them (harder remixed nights). After Hours is the temptation: stay past dawn, keep fighting, the night never has to end — the unhealthy choice, played seductive. The end state is graduation: gold on every class, the building finally quiet… and a new first-year finding the charter. The bell always rings again.
TONE & TOUCHSTONES
- Jujutsu Kaisen — cursed energy, domain expansions, school-as-battleground, cool melancholy under the action. Our primary DNA.
- Persona 3–5 — time-of-day as fiction, a stylish UI that is part of the world, a club of misfits who become a family.
- Spirited Away / Little Nightmares — institutional dread made physical; buildings with appetites.
- Palette: neon-noir — deep blues and slate with one warm light source per shot; dawn gold reserved for hope. Painterly dark-fantasy anime, cel-shaded characters, film grain.
WHAT WE NEED CUT
- Intro trilogy (gates → club walk-in → first toll) assembled into one ~45–60s cold open.
- Boss arrival stingers — 3–6s punches from the splash animations.
- The death beat ("LIGHTS OUT") and the First Bell dawn payoff — the two emotional poles.
- Character spotlight vignettes (one per student) and club walk-in variants (15 lineup combinations exist).
- 30s and 60s store ads — boards are in the reel.
